How to Take Better Care of Your HVAC in 2018

A new year is the perfect time to think about the ways you can make changes and improvements in your life – including your HVAC system. While it might not be the first resolution on your list, paying more attention to your HVAC can save you money and keep your home comfortable in 2018.

Here are 3 little ways to take better care of your HVAC this year.

  1. Change your air filter

An air filter is specially designed to keep dust and other particulates from getting into the motor of your HVAC and should be replaced yearly. If you already know where to find your filter, just write down its measurements and pick up a new one the next time you’re at a hardware store. Then pull the old one out, put the new one in, and you’re good to go until next year!

  1. Consider a programmable thermostat

Using a programmable thermostat to regulate the temperature inside your house can increase the efficiency of your HVAC unit, thus saving you money in the long run.

For example, let’s say program your thermostat for 68 degrees in the daytime, and 64 degrees at night. Those four degrees of difference can come all at once from a manual thermostat – which makes your unit work harder – or it can be eased into gradually by a programmable one. Your energy savings could run as high as 30 percent, and after just a year or two, the investment could pay for itself.

  1. Schedule a service call

Ideally, you should have your HVAC serviced at least once a year. So if it hasn’t been inspected recently, now is the time to schedule a service call to ensure everything is in working order. An experienced and certified technician can identify and fix any problems before they turn into major issues.
